Texans Urged to Prioritize Safe Driving and 'Survive the Drive'

Crashed vehicles on a Texas roadway

Texas fatal crashes are up by more than 20 percent since 2018.

Dangerous driving is so common in Texas that the state's newest campaign to improve safety doesn't ask drivers to slow down or avoid drinking and driving. Instead, it asks people to do one thing - Survive the Drive. Promoted by the Insurance Council of Texas and AAA Texas, the campaign's goal is to shed light on dangerous habits and emphasize the importance of safe driving practices to avoid future car accidents.

We want "to transform the driving culture in Texas by promoting safer habits on the road. With the rising number of accidents caused by distracted driving, speeding, and other reckless behaviors, the need for a comprehensive awareness campaign has never been more urgent," the duo said in a statement.

Fatal car accidents skyrocket in Texas

In Texas, fatal car accidents have soared over the last several years. Overall, the number of total fatal accidents in Texas increased by 23 percent from 2018 through 2021. That's an increase of 850 fatalities, according to federal data. To put it another way, last year, on average, Texas experienced over 12 roadway fatalities per day.

Here are some more statistics that aim to raise awareness:

  • Distracted driving deaths are up 17 percent
  • Drunk driving deaths are up 22 percent
  • Road rage incidents are up 500 percent
  • In addition, earlier this year, a Forbes study ranked Texas as having the "worst" drivers in the U.S.

In explaining the rise, analysts point to bad driving habits that developed during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to persist.

Reducing crash risks

According to organizers, Survive the Drive seeks to educate drivers of all ages about the potential consequences of their actions behind the wheel. It goes beyond warning people about texting while driving; it encourages drivers to be more mindful of their surroundings, adopt defensive driving techniques, and make conscious decisions that prioritize safety.

While there is no way to remove all crash risks, defensive driving techniques can help reduce the chances of an accident, including:

  • Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front to allow time for sudden stops.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings by continuously checking the road and your mirrors.
  • Avoid distractions like phones, eating, or self-grooming while driving.
  • Yield the right of way and be courteous to other drivers.
  • Adjust your driving to weather conditions.
  • Do not engage aggressive drivers. Let them pass.
  • Avoid driving while fatigued.
  • Watch out for cyclists and pedestrians.

Car accident victims deserve accountability

After a car accident, victims have the right to seek compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, and other accident-related expenses. However, obtaining the compensation you deserve from the at-fault driver's insurance company is frequently an uphill battle.

Insurance companies minimize or deny claims and generally will do anything to reduce their liability and protect their bottom line. At Weinstein Law, attorney Jeff Weinstein knows how to stand up to insurance companies. Our law firm uses aggressive techniques and thorough investigations to demand the compensation our clients deserve. We also have the experience, resources, and skills to take your case to court, if necessary.
